SUMMARY:Imaginative contemplation and colloquy: How the Exercises facilitate shifts in images of God and self
DESCRIPTION:Two methods of prayer used extensively in the Exercises are imaginative contemplation and colloquy. Both involve dialogue and the use of the imagination. Imaginative contemplation involves entering a Gospel scene using the senses and imagination and engaging in dialogue with the characters in the story and the person of Jesus. Colloquy is heart-to-heart familiar conversation with God\, Jesus or Mary. The imaginal and dialogical nature of these forms of prayer plays a significant role in facilitating shifts in images of God and self. Exercitants can be freed from false images which inhibit them from deepening their relationship with the Lord. \nWhen: Saturday 29 October 2022\, 10.30am to 12.30pm AEDT) \nFurther details including registration will be provided later \n  \nProfessional Development Gatherings\nGiven the dictum that\, “There is nothing as practical as a good theory\,” these professional development gatherings will integrate theory\, personal experience\, and faith-sharing. The over-arching theme for the professional development gatherings and the conference is images of God and self. The first two professional development gatherings are designed to prepare participants for the conference. Each two-hour professional development gathering will include: (i) preparatory prayer; (ii) input; (iii) guided meditation; (iv) spiritual conversation in pairs; and (v) a group colloquy.

SUMMARY:Online Conference - Healing False God Representations
DESCRIPTION:[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text] \nHealing False God Representations\nAnecdotal evidence indicates that people who make the Spiritual Exercises of St Ignatius of Loyola can experience positive shifts in their God representations and self-concepts. \nDuring this conference\, over 2 days (3 sessions) we will prayerfully explore some of the psychological and spiritual dynamics at work in facilitating these shifts. Through reflection on our own experience and spiritual conversation with others we will increase our awareness of the positive shifts in the God and self-representations of those we accompany.[/vc_column_text][vc_empty_space][vc_btn title=”Download the flyer” color=”warning” size=”sm” link=”url:https%3A%2F%2Fwww.companions.org.au%2Fwp-content%2Fuploads%2F2022%2F08%2FFlyer-Conference-2022.pdf|target:_blank”][vc_empty_space][vc_separator style=”shadow” el_width=”80″][vc_empty_space][vc_column_text] \nWhen\n27 – 28 August 2022 \n  \nWhere\nOnline via Zoom \n  \nSessions\nSaturday 27th August 2022 9.00am -11.00am\nFELT-SENSE: How your body carries images of God and self. SUMMARY:Why God representations matter: the intersection between psychology and spiritual direction
DESCRIPTION:God representations have consequences in people’s lives. People whose God representations are authoritarian (that is\, they imagine God as controlling\, commanding\, or punishing) tend to behave in ways that are aggressive. Conversely\, people whose God representations are benevolent (that is\, they imagine God as helping\, forgiving\, or protecting) tend to behave in ways that are prosocial. Positive God representations are strongly related to well-being and negative God representations are strongly related to psychological distress. \nWhen:  Saturday 25 June 2022\, 10.30am to 12.30pm (AEST) \nFurther details including registration will be provided later \n  \nProfessional Development Gatherings\nGiven the dictum that\, “There is nothing as practical as a good theory\,” these professional development gatherings will integrate theory\, personal experience\, and faith-sharing. SUMMARY:God Representations and God Concepts: What’s the difference?
DESCRIPTION:A God representation can be defined as “a psychological working internal model of the sort of person that the individual imagines God to be.” \nA God representation is not the same as a God concept. A person may say that he or she believes in a loving and forgiving God\, but in fact his or her God representations\, which are often rooted in early object relations\, may actually be negative. Often people’s God representations differ from the normative God concepts they believe they should have according to the religious culture in which they live. \nWhen: Saturday 23 April 2022\, 10.30am to 12.30pm (AEST) \nFurther details including registration will be provided later \n  \nProfessional Development Gatherings\nGiven the dictum that\, “There is nothing as practical as a good theory\,” these professional development gatherings will integrate theory\, personal experience\, and faith-sharing.
